Danish Wakeel’s Dandy Meets Metrosexual Photoshoot

Danish Wakeel who recently presented his couture underwear collection during London Fashion Week, has worked on another impressive collection. Being an extension to the underwear collection, he has focused on moving from underwear to outerwear. The collection comprises of high fashion pieces with a focus on tailoring, extreme detail and cut. Superstar Magazine caught up with him to find out more behind the idea of ‘Dandy Meets Metrosexual’!

Q: Danish, what inspired you to do dandy meets metrosexual?
I have been studying the concept of dandyism in the late 18th century in the UK and France. By considering well known sources for dandyism- biographies of dandies, fashion magazines, the etiquette book and the ‘fashionable novels’. The dandyism of the English Regency period established the models of self-fashioning that became stereotypes of men’s behaviour in the society during the 19th century.

Secondly I have been looking at the concept of metrosexuality. Metrosexual by definition is a single young man with a high disposable income, living or working in a city which is quite evident in the location of the shoot. A metrosexual male was first identified and named in November 1994 in Mark Simpson’s work called ‘Here comes the Mirror Men’, in the Independent.
I have been looking at the male vanity and male narcissism as the two fundamental characteristics of metrosexuality. These qualities are encouraged by activities such as shopping for clothes, accessorizing, and using body products. Attention to appearance and self care are central to metrosexuality.
In my collection of dandy meets the metrosexual I am trying to combine these two concepts somewhere along the line.

Q: How did you choose the models that fit the looks for your collection (any specific characteristics you looked for)?
Yes, the concepts of metrosexuality and dandyism are quite evident in my selection of models for the photo shoot. The qualities I have mentioned above in both concepts are completely evident in my models for the shoot and further in the upcoming show during the first week of June. Designs of my collection are not exposed in the shoot and that is something I am going to reveal in the show. The actual shoot images of my designs will be out once the showcase has taken place on a catwalk in June.

Q: What will be different about this show than the last one?
Well that’s for the people to come down and see it for themselves at the show. It will be worth their time and that I can say very confidently! It will be an enjoyable evening which will kick off with the show and have entertainment for the viewers. Two very honourable personalities including the world’s most expensive hairstylist will be walking down the runway wearing my designs apart from the models themselves. It will all end with an amazing after party!
