Dancing with the Stars Season 12: And the MirrorBall Winner is…

Hines Ward! As expected, Pittsburgh Steeler and Superbowl MVP Hines and his partner Kym Johnson danced off with the MirrorBall trophy on the finale of Dancing with the Stars Season 12. In somewhat of an upset or not, depending on who’s side you were on, Chelsea Kane & Mark Ballas were the first eliminated, leaving Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy in 2nd place. See video of the big moment below. Technically Chelsea may have been the better dancer, having youth and energy on her side, as well as better scores, but she lacked the power base of Kirstie. And that’s what it came down to in the end.

Here are the final scores for the Dancing with the Stars Season 12 Finale:

  • Hines & Kym 89
  • Kirstie & Maks 84
  • Chelsea Kane and Mark 89

The results came after the couples took to the floor for their last dance, a personal favorite of the season selected by each couple. Mark & Chelsea reprised their week 4 Viennese or “Wizard’s” Waltz as they call it and Hines & Kym performed their samba from week 3. Kirstie chose her week 1 cha cha, affectionately referring to it as her first date with Maks. The judges gave her three 10s for her final performance. In fact, they gave all the couples three 10s. Not sure what the point of it was, as even scores across the board would therefore have no effect on the results. Still and all, Kirstie finally received her share of 10s and I think the judges knew they would have been HATED if they didn’t finally dole them out.

The highlights of the 2 hour Dancing with the Stars finale included the Design a Dance (DaD) and the return of all the couples from Season 12. Maks, Cheryl Burke, Lacey Schwimmer and Chelsie Hightower were the winners of the DaD, performing a jive to the Go-Gos “We Got the Beat.” The winning concept had Maks playing a policeman scolding three school girls for naughty behavior. It was Maks’ first DaD win and he was hot! Even the judges were having fun with it; Len was grooving to the music and by the end of the dance, Bruno was wearing Maks’ policeman hat.

Kendra Wilkinson returned to perform her samba with Louis Van Amstel and a bevy of male Troupe dancers. It was a great dance, but she hit her head on one of the pro’s arms during her fallback off the judges table.

Petra Nemcova & Dmitri Chaplin performed their week 3 waltz to a live performance from Josh Groban.

Wendy Williams, who curiously did not dance, appeared in a silly talk show segment where she pretended to interview herself. It wasn’t that funny unfortunately.

Ralph Macchio & Karina Smirnoff reprised their quickstep from week 7 looking sharp. Ralph was the ultimate showman.

Romeo & Chelsie performed a waltz, adding several lifts which were flawless and truly beautiful.

Sugar Ray Leonard & Anna Trebunskaya danced a rumba, with Chris Jericho & Cheryl joining in with a paso. The two former rivals ended up in a mini dance off. Afterwards Chris showed he’d been working on his Bruno impersonation which was dead on and hilarious.

Two of the funnier segments were a slickly produced remix of judges’ comments from the season interspersed with dance and rehearsal clips, and the return of Psycho Mike Catherwood. Ala the Chris Kattan and Chris Parnell dance tryouts skits on Saturday Night Live, Mike spoofed an audition for a spot in the Troupe, garbed in a camouflage leotard and pink knee socks. He then joined the Troupe and partner Lacey for a final spin on the ballroom floor. “Words fail me” said host Tom Bergeron.

Well that’s a wrap for the Season 12 competition. Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable season with some wonderful performances by the stars and pros, a good dose of drama, and of course, a contentious outcome. Stayed tuned for coverage of Dancing with the Stars Season 13 cast rumors!
